What to Pay First When You Can’t Pay Everything

Some months, your income simply cannot cover every expense. An unexpected cost or reduced earnings can leave you facing difficult choices. In that moment, the aim is to protect your essentials and make a manageable plan.

These five steps can help you decide where to start.

1. List every bill.
Write down who you owe, the amount, the due date and the consequences of late payment. Having everything in one place makes decisions clearer.

2. Group expenses by priority.
Start with housing, food, water and electricity. Then identify costs that keep you earning, such as transport, essential childcare and work-related phone access. Review other expenses for possible postponement or negotiation.

3. Pay according to consequences.
The bill generating the most reminders may not carry the greatest immediate risk. Consider how each payment affects your safety, housing and ability to work.

4. Contact providers early.
If you expect to miss a payment, contact the provider before the due date where possible. Ask whether a payment plan, extension or hardship arrangement is available, and confirm the terms before agreeing.

5. Keep a record.
Note the date, the person you spoke to and any agreement reached. Request written confirmation and keep it alongside your bill list.

A difficult month does not define your financial future. Clear priorities and early communication can help you take the next practical step.
